May 31st, 1993, Caldera Corporation found its name while the Shute family drove through Yellowstone National Park.. Coming over the crest of a hill, what lay in front of us looked like a giant version of our first experimental cooktop. Great black discs lay glasslike in the surrounding rocky terrain. The map called it "The Caldera Region."
Encarta's definition of Caldera is: large crater at top of volcano: a large crater in a volcano, caused by a major eruption followed by the collapse of the volcanic pipe walls that form the volcano’s cone. It may later contain a lake. [Late 17th century. Via Spanish from late Latin caldaria "cooking pot," formed from Latin caldus "warm."]
The actual birth of the company happened about a year earlier. At that time we were a granite countertop company looking for a market niche. "Why not put cooking burners right in the granite?"
It turned out not to be as simple as it sounded. Our first award winning product was custom made gas burners in granite. It was a beautiful product but the logistics of dealing with the granite and the fact that the agency approved burners were discontinued by the manufacturer led us to drop that product and focus on more commercially viable product.
Our focus turned to state of the art electric cooktops. Since then our Magic Touch and now our Dial series have been leaders in the innovations and controls we have brought to the Industry, raising the standards for others to try to follow.
That quest to be the best has led to the remarkable Arrow Gastop featured elsewhere on this site.
